Wood-fired pizza in Cowichan
Road Trip To Cowichan

Our list of really good things to see, do and eat in Cowichan is a long one.   From favourite hiking spots (with instagrammable moments) to sipping a glass of wine at one of the many vineyards, there’s something for everyone.

It’s how we feel about road trip stops, a little something for everyone.

At Prima Strada in Cobble Hill, whether you need to stretch your legs, bribe with gelato, grab a pizza to-go or do your part and sample some of Cowichan’s finest local craft beer/wine/cider on a sunny patio, we’ve got you covered.

Pizza…it’s universally accepted by everyone in your car, guaranteed. Salad…for the people that are not bold enough to admit they love pizza. Local craft beer, cider and wine…no description needed. Gelato…for kids of all ages. Parking…we have lots! “I have to go PEE”… there’s someone in every car. You know who you are.

On your adventure up or down the island this summer, we hope you’ll include Prima Strada Cobble Hill on your list.

Chili flake sprinkle onto our delicious mussels
Mussels with PPS House Sausage

We’re spoiled with our seafood options living on the West Coast. When we asked our executive chef Franz what he’d make at home with PPS’ house fennel sausage, it was a no brainer. A rustic bowl of mussels (or as we refer to them cozze con salcicca) , crusty bread and a bottle of Riesling.  Buon Appetito!

Mussels & Clams: 2 tbsp olive oil 1 small yellow onion, chopped 2 garlic cloves, chopped fine 2 PPS house made sausage, crumbled 5 sprigs fresh thyme 3/4 cup of white wine 1lb mussels, debearded, scrubbed 1lb clams, rinsed, scrubbed

To finish: 2 tbsp unsalted butter 1 tsp chili flake 1 tbsp parsley Salt & pepper, to taste Bread, toasted and sliced

Heat oil in a large heavy pot over medium-high heat. Add onion, stirring often until softened, about 2 minutes. While the onion cooks, remove the casing from the PPS house sausage and crumbled into medium sized pieces. Add the garlic and sweat for 15 seconds, then the sausage and thyme. Stir until lightly browned, about 30 seconds.

Deglaze with white wine and add the mussels and clams. Cover and reduce heat to medium-low. Occasionally, with the lid still on, shake the…

The Aviation – Vegas Style!

A cocktail with wings, The Aviation, an old school gin recipe is making a comeback.  When in Las Vegas at Pizza Expo last month (yes, this is real life), we discovered this classic cocktail. We even had 2 to make sure it is really that good and knew it was something to share! It’s bright, refreshing and delivers every time.  Cin cin!

2 oz gin 1/2 oz lemon juice 1/2 oz Creme de Viollette 1/2 oz Luxurdo Maraschino Shake, strain, serve in cocktail glass, garnish with cherry

3 Campari Cocktails – you should make tonight!

For the past few weeks, Geoffrey and I have been enjoying Campari cocktails as we pull together dinner. The Negroni and Milano-Torino cocktails have been on the PPS menu for years, but we’ll admit it took a nudge from Bon Appetit‘s Al Culliton to remind us we had both the ingredients and the will to make it happen! Take your pick, you won’t be disappointed.

Your Shopping List:

1 750-ml bottle Campari1 750-ml bottle gin (nothing fancy)1 750-ml bottle sweet vermouth (look for Carpano Antica or Cocchi di Torino if you can)Club soda or seltzer2 oranges3 lemonsIce

THE Negroni

We’re certain you’ve heard of The Negroni. Perhaps you have a shirt (like I do) that’s says Water for Plants, Negroni for Me! A Negroni is a bit boozy, a bit bitter, and a bit sweet sweet, with a year round appeal. After a snow day or beach day, a Negroni is what you need. It’s easy to make – with equal-parts of gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth.

We’re fans of using a Mason jar but a mixing glass works too. Pour in 1 oz. each Campari, sweet vermouth, and gin. Add ice and stir for a good…

Festa della Donna

Join Pizzeria Prima Strada on March 8th to celebrate Festa Della Donna (International Women’s Day) and raise a glass to our female inspirations.  $1 from every feature pizza sold will benefit Bridges for Women, a local organization that inspires women impacted by violence, abuse and neglect to reclaim their lives.  Wait, it gets better.  Thirsty? For every 12 or 16 oz pint of Riot or Hoyne beer, an additional $1 will be donated!

“A women cuts a fine figure when she’s comfortable in her own skin. Beyond the clothes, beyond the make up, she shines within.” Sophia Loren

Festa della Donna celebrates our personal and professional successes and those of the women in our lives. Lunch or dinner, eating pizza for a cause is worth it!  This is NOT a ladies only event.
